Creating Prosperity

by NashLaoshi on Apr.06, 2010, under Uncategorized

Regarding American jobs, THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN reports in the N.Y. Times: “Between 1980 and 2005, virtually all net new jobs created in the U.S. were created by firms that were 5 years old or less,” said Litan. “That is about 40 million jobs. That means the established firms created no new net jobs during that period.”

And Craig Mundie, the chief research and strategy officer of Microsoft, asks: “What made America this incredible engine of prosperity? It was immigration, plus free markets. Because we were so open to immigration — and immigrants are by definition high-aspiring risk-takers, ready to leave their native lands in search of greater opportunities — “we as a country accumulated a disproportionate share of the world’s high-I.Q. risk-takers.”

NASH: This article is a must-read for all of those interested in economic development.

I’ll give the last word to Mundie: “What is common to Singapore, Israel and America? They were all built by high-I.Q. risk-takers and all thrived — but only in the U.S. did it happen at a large scale and with global diversity, so you had this really rich cross-section.”

Up UP and Away

by NashLaoshi on Mar.16, 2010, under Uncategorized

I’m traveling back to Hong Kong this week. If any of you are in HK, I’d love to see you sometime this next week. Just leave me a comment and I’ll reply via e-mail. (Don’t worry, I won’t publish your comment.)

If things work out, I’ll be staying in HK and continuing my work there. If things don’t work out, I will be leaving by April 1st, to somewhere else in Asia where I will continue my work. Obviously, my first preference would be to return to the Chinese mainland, but until China welcomes me back, that isn’t going to happen.3

Speaking of flying, check out the flying camera pictured here. It’s not real, it’s only a concept piece, the purpose of which is to make you think. Did it work? (Remember, thinking is asking questions.) You can see some other pictures here.

Portfolios

by NashLaoshi on Feb.28, 2010, under Uncategorized

You’ve probably heard me talk about portfolios before, but if you haven’t, then you should read this first.

Okay, welcome back. Here is a portfolio – There is No Them – that I recently stumbled upon. Of course, I really like it, otherwise I wouldn’t be blogging about it.

And from that portfolio, I was led to this company / website that offers free hosting of your (small) portfolio.

Traditionally, portfolios have been for “artists”, including designers, architects, etc…but as I’ve been explaining, in a world where creativity trumps knowledge, you need to have your own portfolio that demonstrates your capabilities, etc…

Take me, for example. My blog demonstrates my teaching abilities, and I have a link to my lovely student photos. I also have some of my other work online, such as when I shamed Wal-Mart into following their own company rules (and Chinese law) to keep their stairways clear. Or this one that shamed Shenzhen Zhong Xue so that they would STOP cheating on their applications to American universities.

So when I approach people regarding work, I don’t only give them references, I give them examples of my work. You know, I show them my portfolio.

Embrace Life

by NashLaoshi on Feb.21, 2010, under Uncategorized

This is a REMARKABLE video – simply stunning. It uses two of the great levers of life (fear and love) to motivate people to ________. (Try and guess its message as you watch.) Are you interested in film, marketing or business? If you are, pay extra attention. Or maybe you’re not interested in those things. That’s okay, but you still need to understand marketing because you have to be able to market yourself, you know, BRAND YOU. Watch and let this video’s creativity inspire you.
The ad was produced by a British organization called Sussex Safer Roads Partnership. Pay attention to the artistry, the music, the use of slow motion, the close-ups, they really nailed this video.

Music Video Editing

by NashLaoshi on Feb.18, 2010, under Uncategorized

I really like the editing of this MV (music video). I also enjoy trying to guess the storyline simply from watching the video, as I can’t understand the French lyrics. This type of editing – multiple views of the same thing, shown on the screen at the same time – was popularized on TV by the series, 24. The name of the artist is STROMAE, and the MV is Alors on danse. ENJOY! Leave a comment and tell me what you like and dislike about this video. What would you do differently?

By the way, many westerners like to dance like that. But so what? Many westerners also like to take drugs that cause them to act less intelligently, you know, stupider.

Symphony of Science

by NashLaoshi on Feb.07, 2010, under Uncategorized

This music video – We Are All Connected – was made by using software commonly referred to as auto-tune. It contains clips Carl Sagan’s Cosmos, The History Channel’s Universe series, Richard Feynman’s 1983 interviews, Neil deGrasse Tyson’s cosmic sermon, and Bill Nye’s Eyes of Nye Series, plus added visuals from The Elegant Universe (NOVA), Stephen Hawking’s Universe, Cosmos, the Powers of 10, and more. It is a tribute to great western minds of science, intended to spread scientific knowledge and philosophy through the medium of music.
